JGN Experiment over 100G SG-HK-JP network and Asia Pacific Ring: Streaming of Singapore Scenic Sites and Sapporo Snow Festival 2018

1 Mar 2018 – SingAREN launched a 100 Gbps circuit connecting Singapore to Japan via Hong Kong (100G SG-HK-JP circuit) on 1 Dec 2017 to advocate research and education initiatives between Singapore and Japan.  The circuit is co-funded by National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan, and National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore, and coordinated by SingAREN.

One of the key projects made possible was the JGN Network Experiment on 6 Feb 2018 between Singapore and Japan, which involved streaming of 8K high resolution uncompressed video, which coincided with the Sapporo Snow Festival 2018.

National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan, in collaboration with SingAREN and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), successfully enabled the advanced network experiment via JGN – a high speed Wide Area Testbed Network managed by NICT, Japan.

On 6 Feb 2018, SingAREN invited its members and partners to witness this special occasion. The key components of the network experiment are as follows:

1. Singapore – Japan

8K recorded movie transfer from Singapore to Japan: Singapore Scenic Sites

The Japanese TV crew visited Singapore during Feb/Mar 2018 to film the Singapore iconic sites with 8K high resolution camera and recorder. SingAREN proposed the list of attractions and showed the crew around Singapore.

On the experiment date (6 Feb), the 8K uncompressed recorded video of Singapore scenery was transmitted from Singapore to specific sites in Japan.  The Japan audience was able to know Singapore better through the vibrant and crystal clear images of Singapore.

2. Japan – Singapore

4K live movie transfer from Japan to Singapore

The SingAREN community experienced the Sapporo Snow Festival live in Singapore, through the live streaming of 4K video from Japan to Singapore, via 4K video camera recording at Sapporo Snow Festival venue.  The viewers at the Singapore site were amazed by the beauty of the snow scriptures and lightings, and shared the joy with the Japanese visitors on-site.

3. Singapore – U.S – Japan

Another component of the network experiment involved the transmission of the 8K high resolution uncompressed video from Singapore to Japan via U.S. through the Asia Pacific Ring (APR), across the Pacific between Asia and North America. The aim of the APR is to facilitate advanced research and education collaboration across the Pacific Ocean. Refer to Figure 1 for Asia Pacific Ring (APR) diagram.

The JGN network experiment, in conjunction with Sapporo Snow Festival 2018, showcased a successful exchange of technologies and cultures between Singapore and Japan. SingAREN looks forward to working with our international partners to enable advanced network applications.
